“I’d say it’s time you two made this legal,” Mark said, quietly, nodding to the sleeping girl draped across Alex. Mark was crouched beside their chair and had jostled Alex awake.
“That would be wonderful, thank you.” Alex yawned, noting the hint of sunshine peeking around the shuttered windows. “Got a magistrate on board?”
“I’m fresh out of magistrates,” Mark said. “Sorry.”
“What time is it?” Alex cleared his throat, wondering how long he could lay still enough for Krystina to remain asleep before he needed either caffeine or a bathroom, probably both.
“No idea the local time but we’ve been on the plane about eighteen hours,” Mark said. “I want to attempt a shower in that tiny bathroom, then it’s your turn. We need to have a quick teleconference with the king and Prince Omar before we land, and I want to arrive wearing a crown.”
“Full? Or partial?”
“Partial,” Mark said. “No need to antagonize anyone immediately upon arrival.”
“Save that for later in the day?” Alex raised his eyebrows, knowing Mark was right. Mark’s full crown was the crown that was symbolic of King Sayid’s successor, and that was widely known.
“We probably won’t have any grand reception like last time,” Mark said. “Just a subdued meal introducing our wives to the rest of the royal family and a quiet evening spent in remembrance of Prince Jared. I’m not sure how many of them were involved in the murder plot so we’ll just assume they’re all guilty and go from there.”
“Why is it you and I are involved in solving murders on two continents?” Alex asked, wishing he were joking. “Do you think anyone’s going to question whether or not Krystina and I are married? I hadn’t thought of that before inviting her along.”
“There are so many affairs barely concealed in this royal family, I don’t think anyone would care.” Mark stood and shook out his legs. “Anyway, I’ll let you know when I’m done in the shower. Try to disentangle yourself from your future wife sometime between now and then.”
“You’re such a tyrant, Your Highness,” Alex said with a sleepy smile, snuggling back into seat and closing his eyes, hoping to treasure a few more minutes with Krystina in his arms.
She stretched a little then settled back into sleep with a soft sigh and resumed breathing evenly. Yeah, he could get used to this. Within seconds he was back to sleep.
