![]() They weren’t completely naked when Alex’s mom walked into his bedroom at midnight, but close enough. Their science experiment hadn’t produced the desired effect, but they’d grown closer than they ever thought possible. They’d explored each other’s bodies just a little. They’d explored each other’s hearts and minds quite a lot. They’d fallen asleep in each other’s arms skin-to-skin from the waist up. That’s probably not how things appeared from his mother’s perspective. “Mom, this is not how it looks,” Alex said. “We just fell asleep together, that’s all.” Sitting up to speak to his mom, Alex pulled the blankets partially off Ellen’s shoulders, revealing a noticeable lack of clothing. He pulled the blankets back over her and Ellen rolled over with a sigh. “Who’s on the phone?” Ellen mumbled. “My mom,” Alex answered. “She’s standing right here, actually.” “Oh good, say hi to your mom for me.” Ellen’s half-asleep slurred voice was actually too adorable for Alex not to chuckle. He turned back to his mom. “Ellen says hello.” Then he cracked up and noticed his mom fighting a smile. Alex reached across the bed to where his hoody lay discarded on top of the comforter, the only article of clothing anywhere close. He slipped it over his head sheepishly. “Do her parents know where she is?” Alex’s mom, Krystina Stephenson, asked in a muted voice. “I’m pretty sure she told them we were going out, but she probably wasn’t expecting to be out this late.” “Didn’t exactly go out, did you?” The sarcasm in his mom’s voice was pointed. “We had some things we needed to talk about,” Alex tried to explain, knowing there was no way she would understand so he shut up. “I can see you did a lot of talking.” She folded her arms across her chest, probably warring between wanting to let her son be an adult while still maintaining some boundaries. “The kind of talking that involves the removal of clothing.” “We actually did. Please, mom, seriously. We’re both adults and we needed to talk through some things. And we’re almost sort of dressed.” Alex cringed, realizing they were nowhere close to dressed, but whatever. “Call her parents and let them know where she is,” his mom said, moving her hand to the doorknob. “I don’t want them worrying she’s in a ditch somewhere. We’ll talk about this in the morning.” She pulled the door closed and Alex was plunged into darkness again. Allowing his eyes to adjust to the moonlight from the curtained window, Alex fumbled on his bedside table for Ellen’s phone. He drafted a quick text, Fell zzz @ Alexs house 2 tired 2 drive gonna stay 2nite his parents r home txt me back. He hit send and lay back down on his pillow, gazing at the beautiful woman sleeping beside him. Less than a minute later, a text came through from Ellen’s mom with two letters. Kk Did he purposely text her mom instead of her dad? Yeah, probably. At least they knew she was alive and not in a ditch. “You’re so beautiful,” Alex whispered. She didn’t respond. Alex sat up halfway and glanced at the door. Not sure why he thought his mom would come back in, but he knew she wouldn’t like what he was about to do. He slipped his sweatshirt back off and lay down beside Ellen again, then gently pulled her closer. Without waking, Ellen settled into his arms, resting her head on his chest. Feeling her skin against his was almost as satisfying as going all the way. Not quite, but if this was all he was going to get, he was okay with that. He sighed in contentment and closed his eyes. Walk back out. He is an adult. It is his choice. Hopefully the teaching of the parents would keep things from going to far.
