“Wow, I look amazing.” Jonnie turned every which way, marveling at the transformation in the full-length mirror in Amberlyn’s bedroom. “You have worked magic.”
“You’ve never looked more like a girl.” Amberlyn clapped her hands in excitement. “I can’t wait for everyone to see you.”
Jonnie even felt like a girl, which was rare. Amberlyn had carefully rolled curls along the length of Jonnie’s silky blonde hair and had given her instructions on how to recreate the look on her own.
Her makeup was more subdued. Jonnie didn’t want too much effort to get ready for practice at the end of the day and games would require even less prep time between getting off the bus and being on the field in her uniform. Just a little waterproof mascara and light lip gloss.
The real magic was in the hair and clothes. She planned to don a skirt almost as short as the cheerleaders on Friday nights to throw off the opposing team, but for the first day of school felt it best to tone things down. She chose a black calf length pencil skirt with a pink tunic that showed off every curve. They paired well with her new little, white Vans shoes and classic Bobbie socks.
“Okay, enough primping,” Amberlyn said, grabbing her backpack. “Skyler will be here to pick us up any minute.”
“Hey, babe, you almost ready?” As if on cue, Skyler poked his head in the door then stopped short and his jaw dropped. “Dude, what the heck did you do?”
“Am I a miracle worker, or what?” Amberlyn grasped Skyler’s arm in excitement and bounced up and down like a little girl.
Jonnie twirled like she was at the end of a runway and placed her hand on her hip like a supermodel. “Do you think I’ll turn some heads today?”
“Uh…” Skyler just stared.
“Skyler, answer her.” Amberlyn pouted. “Doesn’t she look beautiful?”
“She’s always been beautiful,” Skyler whispered. Amberlyn’s face fell and Skyler woke up from his stupor. He quickly turned and wrapped his arm around his crestfallen girlfriend. “Now she looks like a beautiful girl. Yes, you are a miracle worker.”
Skyler leaned forward and pressed a quick kiss to Amberlyn’s lips.
Jonnie had to look away. She walked over to Amberlyn’s bed and lifted her backpack onto one shoulder, glancing once more in the mirror before heading out the door.
