Monique McDonell is an Australian contemporary women’s fiction author who writes chick-lit, romantic comedies and sweet romance novels.
She has written all her life. She was first published when a poem she wrote about a kookaburra in Year 6 (6th grade) was printed in the children’s pages of the Sun-Herald newspaper. A big moment for her because she got validation and ten dollars.
Working in public relations after she graduated from university where she did a minor in creative writing, she didn’t write for pleasure for quite a few years. However, she did write many media releases, brochures and newsletters (and she still does in her day-job!) her creative writing was put on hold.
When she began to write creatively again, she noticed something, writing dark unhappy stories made her so unhappy that she never finished them. So she decided to write a novel with a happy ending, and the words flowed so much that she has been writing happy stories ever since.
After she began a year-long writing course at the NSW Writers’ Centre its members morphed into a writing group known as The Writer’s Dozen. In 2008 they published a highly successful anthology, Better Than Chocolate.
In 2008 she was selected for the QWC/Hachette Livre Manuscript Development Course for her novel Mr Right and Other Mongrels. In 2009 she received a Highly Commended in the Romance Writers of Australia’s Valerie Parv Awards for her novel Hearts Afire. These are the first two books she published in 2012, along with a third novel, Alphabet Dating.
Since her first three books were released, she has written and published two more stand-alone novels, titled Building Attraction and A Fair Exchange and several novellas. Her series include The Upper Crust Series, The Jewel Sisters, about four sisters from coastal Australia, and the Courtside Romance series.
This year she had No Time for Trouble, No Brides Club Book 4 included in the No Brides Club sweet romance series, and No Time for Temptation, which released in February 2020.
She is also one of six authors who run the Coffee Talk on the Boardwalk Facebook group. Together they write the Cinnamon Bay romance series and her first stand-alone in the series Playing Doctor released this year.
She has had non-fiction pieces included in Copyfight (New South Press) in 2015 and in How to Be an Author: 36 Real Authors Talk Writing and Publishing in 2016.
You might be surprised to find out that she is not really like the characters in her books. However, she does share something in common with some of them. Allegra (Mr Right and Other Mongrels) has a dog phobia like her, Cassie (Hearts Afire) falls in love on a tropical island which is how she met her husband, and Amelia (A Fair Exchange) was an exchange student who is now all grown up.
In 2015 she founded the Facebook writing group #1000wordsaday.
She currently lives on the inspiring East Coast of NSW in Australia with her husband and daughter.
